Today Y8/9 historians imagined they were wealthy settlers in the 18th Century. They had travelled to the New World intending on developing a cotton plantation. We went to the garden area and discussed what we needed to do to convert the scrub land at the back for farming. After the back breaking work of felling trees, digging out the roots, digging out the grass, ploughing the land, sowing seeds, tending the crops then collecting the cotton buds each harvest… Then bagging the harvest for shipping back to England and starting all over again, we felt exhausted! It was then we realised why people would buy slaves to do the work for them! It was good to use our imagining muscles as well as our empathy skills. Well done to my hardy band of adventurers.
